Layover Diaries: Riyadh — A Glimpse of Saudi Arabia Beyond the Haramain
When planning my Umrah Plus Turkey & Cairo journey with Trip.com’s multicity flight search, my itinerary looked something like this:
- Nov 3 Kuala Lumpur → Abu Dhabi or Muscat (layover) → Jeddah
- Nov 11 Jeddah → Cairo (direct flight)
- Nov 14 Cairo → Athens or Bucharest (layover) → Istanbul
- Nov 22 Istanbul → Kuala Lumpur (via Tashkent)
In summary, my Umrah Plus Turkey & Cairo plan already included three extra cities — Abu Dhabi/Muscat, Athens/Bucharest, and Tashkent — without major additional costs. (Only the Tashkent option added about RM400.)
So far, I’ve drafted blogs for each layover option to help finalize my choices:
- Abu Dhabi — 6 Hours at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque & Beyond
- Muscat in a Day — Mosque, Souq & Corniche
- Athens — 8 Hours Where East Meets West at the Acropolis
- Bucharest — 7 Hours in the “Little Paris of the East”
- Tashkent — Gateway to the Silk Road in Under 12 Hours
But then I returned to the Trip.com multicity search and thought:
💭 What if I added an extra adventure on the Jeddah → Cairo leg instead of flying direct?
That’s when Riyadh appeared. A short stop in Saudi Arabia’s capital would not only be cheaper and more straightforward than some alternatives, but also hassle-free — since I’d already be on a Saudi eVisa for ziyarah and Umrah.
While most Umrah travelers only see Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah, a Riyadh layover offers a rare glimpse of Saudi Arabia beyond the Haramain — a modern capital where heritage, culture, and futuristic skylines meet.
My Flight Path
- 07:00 Nov 11 — Depart Jeddah (JED T1) → Riyadh (RUH T5)
- 08:40 — Arrive in Riyadh, with about 12 hours of transit time
- 20:05 — Depart Riyadh (RUH T4) → Cairo (CAI T2)
✅ No baggage re-check required, only a simple terminal change at King Khalid International Airport.
Visa Requirements 🛂
- If you’re on an Umrah visa or Saudi eVisa, you can enter Riyadh without issues.
- Saudi offers an eVisa for many nationalities, valid for both tourism and religious visits. Always confirm requirements before flying.
From Airport to City
- King Khalid International Airport (RUH) is about 40 km from downtown Riyadh.
- A taxi or ride-hailing service like Uber will cost around SAR 80–100.
Metro system is still developing, so road transport is most convenient.

- Choose 1–2 attractions max to avoid rushing.
- Avoid peak afternoon heat — best to explore between 9 AM–4 PM.
- Since this is a domestic connection (Jeddah → Riyadh → Cairo), no baggage re-check is needed — just allow time for the terminal change.
- Dress modestly — abayas for women, long trousers for men.
- Keep an eye on prayer times — shops and attractions may pause briefly.
- If you only have 6 hours, focus on Masmak Fortress + Kingdom Centre.
