💡 How I Found This
When searching for flights on Trip.com, I noticed that instead of direct flights, some search results grouped flights by alliances:
✅ Oneworld
✅ SkyTeam
✅ Star Alliance
These alliance routes are often cheaper than direct Umrah flights, but the catch is: you’ll have long layovers in other countries — which you can actually turn into a short bonus trip if you plan wisely!
🗂️ ✈️ Example Itinerary (Oneworld)
✅ KLIA – Jeddah (via Mumbai & Amman)
1️⃣ Kuala Lumpur → Mumbai (Malaysia Airlines) — 5h 10m
Layover: 7h 55m (self-transfer)
2️⃣ Mumbai → Amman (Royal Jordanian) — 5h 50m
Layover: 15h 10m in Amman
3️⃣ Amman → Jeddah (Royal Jordanian) — 2h 25m
Total travel time: Long!
But: The ticket price can be below RM2,800, compared to a direct Umrah flight that might cost RM3,000–5,000 depending on season and promos.
🗂️ ✈️ Example Itinerary (Star Alliance)
✅ KLIA – Jeddah (via Addis Ababa)
1️⃣ Kuala Lumpur → Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) — ~9h 30m
Layover: 6–12 hours (typical)
2️⃣ Addis Ababa → Jeddah (Ethiopian Airlines) — ~3h 30m
Total travel time: Long!
But: You might find fares around RM2,800–4,000 — still cheaper than peak Umrah direct flights.
🗂️ ✈️ Example Itinerary (SkyTeam)
✅ KLIA – Jeddah (often via cities like Doha, Muscat, or Colombo)
SkyTeam options sometimes route you through Sri Lanka, Oman, or Qatar with airlines like Oman Air, SriLankan Airlines, or Qatar Airways (depending on partnerships).
You could squeeze in a short city tour if your layover is long enough, but check visa rules!
📍 Why It’s Worth Considering
✅ Save Money: You’re only paying for 1 flight ticket, just with multiple legs.
✅ See More: Turn long layovers into short city visits — Mumbai, Amman, Addis Ababa all have interesting cultural sites.
✅ Good Value: Full-service airlines usually include hand + checked baggage (20 kg or more), meals, and inflight entertainment — so no hidden costs like low-cost airlines.
✅ Flexible: Good for solo travelers or couples with flexible schedules.

⚠️ What You MUST Know
✔️ Self-Transfer: Many routes are “self-transfer” — you’ll need to:
- Collect bags, clear immigration, re-check in.
- Have valid transit visas if you leave the airport.
✔️ Add Travel Days:
Don’t forget to count extra days for layovers in your leave plan. If you want 10 days in Makkah & Madinah, you’ll need 12–14 days total.
✔️ Visa Requirements:
- Jordan: Many nationalities can get visa on arrival.
- India (Mumbai): Usually needs an eVisa.
- Ethiopia (Addis Ababa): Many nationalities need a transit or tourist visa if you exit the airport.
✔️ Possible Extra Costs:
- Short day tours (~USD 50–150).
- Airport hotel if layover is overnight.
- Meals, transport during layover.

✈️ Sample Day Tours You Could Add
Jordan:
- Petra day trip.
- Dead Sea visit.
- Amman city highlights.
Mumbai:
- Street food & markets.
- Gateway of India.
- Short cultural walk.
Addis Ababa:
- National Museum (see “Lucy”).
- Local coffee tasting.
- Short city heritage tour.

🏷️ Is This Right for You?
✅ Perfect if you’re young, flexible, and want to stretch your Umrah budget.
