A Vision Brought to Life

Zailan Haji Yusop, from Miri, Sarawak, is the man behind this architectural marvel. As the founder of eLANZ Design Build Sdn Bhd, he has dedicated over 30 years to the field of architecture. Despite his vast experience, Zailan describes the project of Masjid Sri Sendayan as his most significant work to date.

The Journey of Building a Masterpiece

Working on Masjid Sri Sendayan was no easy task. The mosque is a donation (wakaf) by RHB Group founder, Tan Sri Abd Rashid Hussain. From the start, Zailan knew that this project would require meticulous planning and attention to detail. Tan Sri Abd Rashid was actively involved in the design process, frequently inspecting and monitoring the progress. As Zailan noted, "It was like arguing with your spouse," reflecting on the intensity of their creative discussions.

Despite these challenges, Zailan and his team persevered. The result is a mosque that stands as a symbol of dedication, generosity, and religious devotion. Spanning over 4.5 hectares, Masjid Sri Sendayan features three prayer halls, with the main hall accommodating up to 3,000 people. The mosque also includes lecture halls, a library, multipurpose halls, and administrative buildings, among other facilities.

An Architectural Triumph

Masjid Sri Sendayan's design is both functional and visually striking. The mosque incorporates materials from various countries, including Egypt, Turkey, Dubai, and Morocco. Its intricate wood carvings, gold plating, and exquisite tiled walls make it a unique and memorable place of worship.

When the mosque opened its doors for the first time, more than 5,000 people attended the Friday prayer. This overwhelming response was a testament to the significance of this project. Zailan Haji Yusop's vision and hard work had culminated in a mosque that would serve as a beacon for the community.

A Legacy of Humility and Generosity

Masjid Sri Sendayan is more than just a building; it's a symbol of one man's humble approach to life and his dedication to serving others. Zailan describes Tan Sri Abd Rashid as a man who doesn't seek recognition for his contributions, preferring to let his work speak for itself. This humility is reflected in the mosque's serene atmosphere and thoughtful design.

Zailan hopes that Masjid Sri Sendayan will inspire others to give back to their communities and embrace a spirit of unity and faith. The mosque stands as a reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration, perseverance, and a shared vision.

As I look back at the journey of my schoolmate Zailan Haji Yusop, I'm reminded of the dedication and creativity required to design a landmark like Masjid Sri Sendayan. His achievements as an architect are a testament to his passion for creating spaces that inspire and uplift.
