Running a successful food outlet is never easy, but when you hear the story of Puan Hairiyah Binti Apandi, you'll realize it's about more than just serving great food—it's about resilience, passion, and honoring one's roots. Hairiyah, a classmate from my secondary school days, has built a thriving business in Kuching, Sarawak, with her restaurant, Barong Tinuk, which I'm proud to support.
Overcoming Early Challenges
Hairiyah's journey to success wasn't without challenges. When she was about five years old, her father passed away, leaving her in the care of her grandmother, Hariah Binti Omar. Raised by her late grandmother and often moving around following her uncle, who was a lorry driver, Hairiyah experienced a life that required adaptability and perseverance. Despite these early difficulties, she never lost her spirit or determination to build a better life.

A Family Business with a Heart
Hairiyah's children, Ayu Zurriha Juzi and Zaki, are integral to the success of Barong Tinuk. Ayu oversees the daily operations, while Zaki takes care of the kitchen and customer relations. Together, they ensure that each dish is prepared with care and that customers feel welcomed.
Hairiyah's story is one of determination, family, and community. Her ability to overcome personal challenges and build a successful business from scratch is truly inspiring. Barong Tinuk's popularity continues to grow, thanks to Hairiyah's hard work and the dedication of her family.
Honoring Tradition and Building a Legacy
Barong Tinuk has become a staple in Kuching, drawing visitors from near and far to experience the traditional flavors of the Melanau people. The restaurant's name has historical significance, referring to a village that once served as a resting place for fishermen and is no longer in existence due to erosion. The term "Tinuk" means "grilled" in the local language, reflecting the authentic Melanau cooking style.
